1. Who Qualifies as an NRI for LIC Policies?
An NRI (Non-Resident Indian) is an Indian citizen residing outside India for employment, business, or vacation purposes. LIC allows NRIs to apply for insurance if they meet any of the following conditions:
- Indian passport holder living abroad.
- Person of Indian Origin (PIO) or Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) with valid documentation (select policies).
- Age between 18–60 years (for most plans).
Tip: LIC does not currently extend policies to foreign citizens (non-Indian passport holders) unless covered under special schemes.
2. Application Process: In India or Abroad

Option 1: During Visit to India
- Apply like any resident.
- Complete KYC, medicals, and policy formalities during your stay.
Option 2: Mail Order Business (MOB)
- Apply from your country of residence.
- Documents must be attested by an Indian embassy official, notary, or LIC-authorized entity.
- Medicals can be done in local country (via approved panel).
Note: MOB is limited to select countries and policies. The maximum sum assured is typically INR 3 crore.
